Interestingly enough, Classica really is the magazine where I have the most overlap with their reviews, for Gramphone it is a bit more hit and miss. One is the UK’s Gramophone, the other France’s Classica Magazine. Regular readers of my blog know that I mainly follow two classical magazines as a reference. You’ll find the recordings here (Qobuz/Hyperion): Wishing all of you a Happy New Year 2021! I just wasn’t able to find 5 albums that I liked enough to give them 5 stars this year. This will be my last post of the year, there won’t be a similar list for Jazz. I can’t wait until Easter (I know, Christmas is just barely over…) so I can play it again in repetition. This is not his first recording but potentially his best. I had initially missed this and only really noticed it when it popped up in the Gramophone Awards. Masaaki Suzuki has released both a St John (recorded in Cologne) and a St Matthew Passion, that have both won accolades from critics.īut let me flag here another recording by another artist that I admire (and had the pleasure of seeing live already), the great Philippe Herreweghe. How could a best of list on my blog be complete without some Bach? This year, we had several great recordings of the choral masterpieces. Bach: St John Passion – Herreweghe (2020 recording) 18 to the amazing but not very accessible late works, that one should never have only one complete cycle. Now, is their new complete cycle something that will replace my favorite box of all times, the complete recordings by the legendary Takacs Quartet? No, but honestly, the Beethoven string quartets are such masterpieces, and have such a breadth of material from the early op. They have now recorded all Beethoven String Quartets in a world tour (mostly pre-Covid). I’m a big fan of the Quatuor Ebène, and already had the pleasure of seeing them live some years ago. Beethoven Complete String Quartets by the Quatuor Ebène Both his Beethoven and the Sibelius give a very fresh take on these concertos. He really is one of the best violin players of our era, and probably also somewhat underrated. Both the recordings of Martin Helmchen with Andrew Manze as conductor, and this recording with Christian Tetzlaff under Robin Ticciati both show the full potential of this orchestra.īetween Helmchen’s now complete Beethoven cycle (I reviewed one volume here), and this new recording of the violin concerto by Tetzlaff, I’m highlighting Tetzlaff here. I must admit, this second or third (depending on how you rank) orchestra of Berlin always flew a bit under my radar, behind the Berlin Philharmonic and the Staatskapelle Berlin. In this Beethoven year, two German artists recorded excellent versions of the Beethoven classics, both with the Deutsches Sinfonieorchester Berlin. Beethoven and Sibelius Violin Concertos – Christian Tetzlaff I love Brahms’ late piano pieces, and this is a worthy addition to the top recordings of these works, alongside Arkadi Volodos. Brahms Late Solo Piano Works by Stephen Hough And it won the Gramophone Album of the Year in its category, which was well deserved. But what can I say, this new album with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Elim Chan is just great (see my original review here). Yes, Benjamin Grosvenor regularly gets 5 stars on this blog, guilty as charged. Chopin’s Piano Concertos by Benjamin Grosvenor (Decca 2020) Interestingly, less Beethoven than I’d have expected in here. I got lucky, I attended two socially distanced concerts during the times when Covid in Europe was still at lower levels, both involving Beethoven by the way (Igor Levit playing some piano sonatas, and Lars Vogt playing the 4th piano concerto with Paavo Järvi).īut without further ado, let’s jump right into it and list my top 5 classical albums of the year. We certainly got a lot of new album releases, but we clearly didn’t have the live concerts we all wished for. It was supposed to be the big Beethoven anniversary year, with concerts all over the world and a lot of new album releases. I don’t need to tell anybody that 2020 was a weird year to say the least. Typically shear values are incorporated into the tables, and required bearing length at the ends of beams are given too. Look carefully at the literature before you assign roof loads per-foot of ridge beam or header. In other words, some manufacturers do not base roof loads on horizontal projection, but rather base loads on the actual length of the rafter. Be careful: some manufacturers require that you slope-adjust your roof loads. Usually, each manufacturer automatically applies these reductions and clearly labels the appropriate application in the various tables for floors and roof conditions. For example a roof is subjected to a full snow-load only a small percentage of time during the course of a year, so this is factored into the roof’s load calculation. Building codes allow reductions in live loads based on duration of load. Span tables for engineered wood are used in a very similar way as those for sawn lumber. And at times, they make or break a design. All of these high-performance products are cost effective in some applications. An LVL product that has an Fb of 3100 will carry more load than and LVL product with an Fb of 2400. No matter what product you specify, structural performance is controlled by strength (Fb) and Stiffness (E). Engineered wood is consistent from one piece to the next because each piece is made more-or-less the same. Strength-reducing characteristics like knots, grade and slope of grain are controlled during manufacturing process so that the end product represents a more efficient use of the wood fiber. The claims are basically true, but you do pay for the improved performance. Fv does not change when you double the thickness.Įngineered Wood manufacturers are quick to point out that their products provide superior strength and stiffness. Make sure the shear value (Fv) for the species and grade you use exceeds the Fv listed in the span table. If you size a roof beam like a structural ridge that has a L/240 limitation, you would multiply the minimum E-value by 0.666 (785,000 x 0.666 = 522,810 in this case). The table lists spans with a deflection limit of L/360, normal for floor loads. The required E-value does not change when you double the 2×6 because as you double the allowable load, you are doubling the thickness of the beam. Therefore, a double 2×6 carries 2 x 347 = 694 pounds per lineal foot. Note: a single 2×6 will support 347 pounds per lineal foot of beam. (in AF&PA Design Values for Joists and Rafters #2 hem-fir = Fb psi & E psi- so use span table column Fb 1100)Ĭhoose the row for the size of lumber used in the double header: use 2×6 in this example. Select the Fb column of the lumber you intend to use Pick the span you want (pick 4’0″ for example) Just do the following:ĭetermine the total load per foot of beam But you can trick WSDD tables into giving you values for double or triple 2-by beams with other deflection limits. The WSDD tables only list values for solid wood beams at deflection limits of L/360. The WSDD is an extremely useful book (WSDD costs $20. American Forest & Paper Association’s Wood Structural Design Data, provides span recommendations for solid-sawn wood beams up to 32 feet, but the table runs a hefty 140 pages. And even though span tables provide limited data, they are very long. Most beam tables only list values for whole-foot spans like 11’0″, 12’0″, etc. You merely look for the distance you need to span match the load per foot of beam to the appropriate Fb(strength) and E(stiffness) values listed and bang: you have a winner! Span tables are easy to use, but they have limitations. Sawn-Lumber span tables are convenient tools. Technical experts have computed many combinations of these variables and present a variety of solutions in the form of span tables. You can do these calculations yourself or you can use span tables. Formulas that determine the allowable span and size of a beam rely on a host of variables like species, grade, size, deflection limit and type of load. Structural ability of sawn- and engineered-wood beams are predicted through mathematical calculation. No matter what material we specify, beams must provide adequate strength, stiffness, and shear resistance. We will compare the performance and cost of sawn-lumber, LVL, Timberstrand, Parallam and Anthony Power Beam in several different applications. We know how to measure the forces acting on a beam, now we’ll use this information to choose the appropriate structural material to resist the loads. In Part 1, “ Calculating Loads On Headers and Beams“, we learned how to trace load paths and translate roof, wall and floor loads into pounds per lineal foot of supporting beam. Once the loads acting on structural beams are calculated, the next step is to size and select the appropriate beam. Some information contained in it may be outdated. Sounds easy enough, however looks can be deceiving. The premise behind Industry Giant II is quite simple, to take a small wad of cash and turn it into big business. The single player modes presented in Industry Giant II are numerous, from a vast collection of scenarios to the ability to setup endless games, as well as the exceptional tutorial campaigns. Not to make it sound like a breeze, as Industry Giant II can be quite a challenging and entertaining game. Players are in control of a complete corporation, everything from the land that the company sits on to the construction of new buildings, not to mention product transportation, development, resource collection, and financial management all in one nice little package. Industry Giant II isn't your normal business simulation to say the least. Behold the mysteries of Industry Giant II. Although this may come as a surprise to some, JoWood has actually managed to produce a business simulation that is entertaining, a paradox of sorts yet it speaks the truth. JoWood has taken it upon themselves to develop a product to fully manage business everything from transportation to financial management is in your hands. Although the genre is not overly popular on it's own, business models are commonly added to any management simulations such as RollerCoaster Tycoon or Sim City, although on a much lesser scale. JoWood Productions seems to be one of only a small handful of publishers producing business simulations Trevor Chan's Capitalism II is the first to come to mind. Industry Giant II offers improved zoom functions and a dynamic mouse-click menu system to replace the static menus of the original, opening up the full screen for management of your industrial projects and layouts. Shops, storage facilities, production facilities, transportation, maintenance and repair, vehicles, and special buildings are topics of discussion in the glossy manual, each with a full array of tips and suggestions to help ease the learning curve. Play at beginner or professional skill levels in Skirmish mode against the computer, or indulge in multiplayer action via LAN or the Internet with up to three other players. Gameplay modes include three mission-based campaigns or an "endless" scenario that gives you 80-years (1900-1980) to meet one of three winning conditions, but play can continue to the year 9000. Three tutorial missions cover basic game concepts, production of a complex production chain, and elements of transportation (routes, methods, and timing). Major facets of controlling an industrial conglomerate include gathering and processing raw materials, establishing optimum sites for your factories, planning effective shipping transportation (more than 50 methods are available), and marketing your goods. Changing weather can now affect production and shipping, as many consumables are seasonal and require a deeper sense of managerial planning. Industry Giant II expands the levels of corporate management of the original title by offering a wider range of resources and products (more than 150), diplomatic interaction, and an improved, more intuitive, menu system. Identify consistent and/or reliable dual-pol signatures associated with various precipitation processes in winter storms, such as the formation of ice pellets or large snowflakes.Improve a dual-pol “hydrometeor classification algorithm” that combines dual-pol radar observations with temperature information from numerical weather prediction models to determine what type of precipitation is being observed. Moreover, the correlation between the two returns is very different in cases of precipitation compared to non-precipitation returns.ĭual-pol researchers at NSSL are endeavoring to: For example, the corresponding cross-sections give forecasters a measure of the size and shape of the object, which can be used to infer more information about the types of objects that scattered the waves, like whether the radar is observing rain or snow, or big raindrops versus small raindrops. As these perpendicular fields scatter, or “bounce,” off of an object and are received back at the radar, a computer program processes information about the horizontal and vertical properties of the particles. With dual-pol technology, the picture becomes two-dimensional because the radar sends both horizontally and vertically polarized electromagnetic waves. This one-dimensional picture makes it difficult to tell the difference between precipitation types. Single-polarization Doppler radars, including the NOAA radars before the dual-polarization upgrade, typically transmit horizontally polarized electromagnetic waves, which only give a measure of the horizontal dimension of precipitation particles, like snow, ice pellets, hail and rain. A computer processes the returned signals and, through algorithms, can identify kinds of particles the radar “saw,” including how quickly the particles are moving toward or away from the radar (i.e., the Doppler effect). Some of this energy is scattered by particles or objects in the atmosphere and returns back to the radar antenna. Radars send out short pulses, also known as bursts, of electromagnetic energy. The upgraded radars also help tell the difference between smoke, birds, bats and bugs. The upgraded radars offer 14 new radar products to better determine the type of precipitation, the intensity and how much precipitation may fall in addition to confirming if a damaging tornado is occurring during a storm. Since the completion of the upgrade to dual-pol, the NOAA NWS Warning Decision Training Division has provided timely and relevant training to all NWS forecasters who use the technology. JPOLE proved that significant improvements in rainfall estimation, precipitation classification, data quality and weather hazard detection were possible using polarimetric radar and provided supporting evidence for upgrading the entire NEXRAD fleet to dual-pol capabilities. During JPOLE, NSSL scientists aided in data interpretation as it was delivered in “real-time” to NWS forecasters and other users. In 2002-2003, NSSL conducted the Joint Polarization Experiment (JPOLE) to demonstrate the operational capabilities of the prototype dual-pol WSR-88D radar. Usually a red dot next to a green dot signifies a tornado, but that did not make sense since this was a beautiful, sunny day.A quick glance at the new dual polarization technology added to the national weather radar network. We saw one green dot (which means the object is moving towards the radar), and one red dot (which means the object is moving away from the radar). (True story: I was volunteering at the National Weather Service one sunny afternoon, and we saw some objects show up on the radar, right around where Interstate 20 is located. This process is called “ remote sensing”. Using this analogy, the hail, rain, bugs, and other atmospheric objects are the “people at the door” and the radio waves are the “knock” – you know something’s there, but you can only create an educated guess as to the object’s true identity. Think of it like this – when someone knocks on a door, you know that a person is at the door (because they’re knocking!), but you don’t know exactly who is at the door (that is, until you open it and let them in!). Remember, though, that radars cannot “see” the difference between objects like hail, rain, and bugs – it’s only receiving reflected energy, not a “snap-shot” or a picture of the object that reflected the energy (this is the product of reflected light waves).
